The long 4th of July weekend with its lazy, lakeside days; picnics and blues festivals; hours of cycling quiet roads; and hang time on patio or by the pool brought expansiveness into summer.
This American holiday celebrates freedom. Freedom from the British Empire in 1776 opened up the opportunity to establish a new nation. Out of this freedom emerged the Declaration of Independence and one of the most beautiful and powerful sentences ever written: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (people) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Freedom FROM became the Freedom TO.
I’ve been captivated by this idea all weekend. Wondering where I can bring liberation for myself – what can I free myself FROM so I have the freedom TO live life more fully, more open-heartedly and truly engage in pursuits which promote happiness?
On Friday, I took the day off. I gave myself freedom from all the “shoulds” on my list. I gave myself permission to hang out on my deck in a comfy chair, listen to the birds, soak in the vivid colors of my flower garden, take naps, and play with words.
Freedom from obligations opened up the space to write a poem – the first in several months. It was a delicious experience.
Here are some other ways to liberate ourselves:
Freedom from insidious, self-doubt gremlins gives us the freedom to listen to our inner wisdom and whole-heartedly create. Freedom from constantly playing the comparison game gives us the freedom to relax and do our own thing. Freedom from the people-pleasing-need to say “Yes” give us the freedom to authentically and unapologetically say “No”.

Conveniently, July 4th was also a new moon. It provides a lovely opportunity to pay attention, to set a new intention, and play around for yourself with this notion of freedom FROM and freedom TO. Consider using the next 15 days, as the moon progresses through its own phases from dark to light, to grow ever more magnificent yourself.
