September, as a month, is a bit like a classically glamourous Hollywood star. The youthful glow of summer is still present in the warm, sunny days and vivid green rolling across yards and hillsides. Yet, the tell-tale laugh lines, her longer, flowing sleeves, and the scarves at the neckline hint at time moving forward along the continuum. September embraces this season of her life, with her long shadows, vivid orange sunsets, and the vibrant purple asters, tall elegant sunflowers, the graceful sweeping burgundy and white-tufted grasses.
At this time of year I vacillate between feeling a bit melancholy, knowing the warmest days are behind us, and realizing another year is nearly over, and feeling completely awake, alive, and happy, savoring the vibrant beauty and relishing what I’ve learned about myself through the experiences of the last twelve months.
The Gift of Being Reflective:
I noticed artistically shaped seed pods forming on plants, as I walked through a lush prairie, during an evening last week, with several friends. Where there had been a spectacular flower, was now a rounded pocket of seeds, waiting for wind and rain to release and scatter them.
“What,” I wondered, “do I need to release and let go of?” There is something about the long fingers of light, the warm air with the cool under tones, and the fog rising from the valley in the morning, which has me in a more reflective place.
This time of year is a rich gold mine for prairie enthusiasts who are busy gathering seeds from prime plants so they can be sowed in a newly established prairie come spring. My musings had me wondering, what lessons and gifts from the experiences of my year could I too, gather up like seeds? How could they become more useful and available to me if properly sown in fertile soil in the spring?
It is, as a dear friend who was walking along side me pointed out, a great time of year to center ourselves in gratitude. Allowing ourselves to spend a few moments each day with an open heart of thankfulness and a heart filled with awe, is a lovely way to savor the bounty in and of our lives.
The Gift of Being Intentional:
These last days of September are perfect for considering what we want to create for ourselves in the upcoming months. While the year is winding down, the hectic, holiday season is right around the corner. You have a choice about how you want to approach it:
- Will you be anxious and dread the stress that comes from shopping, decorating, and planning and attending events?
- Will you be disorganized and manic?
- Will you be intentional and thoughtful?
- Will you be joyful and relaxed and ready to celebrate?
On a Monday night call with a beautiful group of women, we were challenged to set an intention for ourselves for this last quarter. We were asked to consider: what do you want to create in these final months of the 2016? What possibility are you willing to live into? What benefits might there be if you live, fully, into the intention you set for yourselves?
Great questions. I ask the same of you.
There is plenty of glowing vibrancy and light left in September; scoop it up, savor it, and be intentional.
The Gift of a Thought-Partner:
Give yourself the gift of space and time to go inside and reflect. You can, of course, do this on your own some rainy afternoon, sitting with your journal. And, the reality is, we very rarely give ourselves this time and space. Sometimes, teaming up with a thought-partner is just what is needed.
I would be honored to be your thought-partner as you consider your own answers to the questions I asked above.
There are two ways to take advantage of this opportunity:
One: You are welcome to contact me here to find a mutually agreeable time, for a single thought-partner session, I have special pricing available through the end of October.
Two: I’ve also set aside Sunday, October 2nd for 6 sessions to give away to readers of my blog – 6 sessions, my treat. Contact me here and write Sunday, October 2nd in the subject line and I’ll be in touch with available times.
